Research

My research focuses on inequality, crime and punishment, families and children, and quantitative and historical methods. I am especially interested in the ways that families interact with the criminal-legal and child-welfare systems, with consequences for economic, racial, and gender inequality. I also work on developing new, large-scale sources of longitudinal administrative data. See the above links for more information about my research.

Teaching

I generally teach in the areas of sociological theory, social stratification, radical criminology, and mindfulness meditation. I’m happy to provide syllabi and other teaching materials upon request.

Community

My teaching frequently involves collaboration with the Indianapolis community. I teach a service-learning course in partnership with Constructing our Future, a re-entry organization founded and led by women formerly incarcerated at Indiana Women’s Prison (IWP). I also facilitate a small program in which undergraduate students serve as tutors in IWP’s high-school equivalency program. I’m always excited to discuss and involve others in this work, and to support others engaged in similar work.
